Town Spotlight: Carlisle in Cumberland County, PA

Carlisle, nestled in scenic Cumberland Valley, is an appealing blend of the old and new. Abundant in American history, the town is home to the Carlisle Barracks, The Army War College, The Old Cumberland County Courthouse, Army Heritage Trail and Dickinson College. Since the 1980s, Carlisle has become known internationally for hobby car collectors and automotive auctions through Carlisle Events.

Carlisle’s allure is easy to see. The downtown is a tree-lined segue to galleries, restaurants, antiques, breweries/cideries and boutiques for a unique shopping and dining experience. These pedestrian-friendly streets make it an easy commute between High and Pomfret Street where many of the eateries and shops are found. Looking for a leisurely lunch? Sample one of the amazing items at the Sage Café, located in the former Piatto Restaurant building on West Pomfret Street. Prefer a spirited beverage? Try one of the Cumberland Valley Beer Trail locations. You can take your beverage with you as you stroll the downtown, as long as it is in a non-breakable container. If a cup of coffee or tea is more your style, drop in at one of the locally owned coffee shops, like Denim Coffee.

If you are in Carlisle on a Wednesday, don't miss visiting Farmers on the Square . Located at the corner of Hanover and High Street, this historical farmers’ market traditionally starts by the ringing the bell at 3PM. A wide range of vendors take part in this year-round market.

Are you a nature enthusiast? Bring your bike and ride on the town’s bike-friendly lanes. Hike just outside of Carlisle on the Appalachian Trail. If water beckons you, try your fly-fishing skills on one of the Class 1 fly-fishing streams or kayak on the nearby Susquehanna River. Kings Gap and the Kings Gap Environmental Education Center provide panoramic views of the Cumberland Valley along with educational activities and programs on the area’s natural resources.

Wherever your interest lies, visit charming Carlisle with its variety of cultural and recreational experiences:
a small town with big opportunities.
