5 Benefits of an Open Floor Plan

When it comes to selecting an interior floor plan for your new home, there are two main layouts you can choose from - an open concept floor plan and a closed or traditional floor plan. An open floor plan consists of one or more large open rooms that can serve as multiple rooms within a single living space. Most open floor plans consist of a combination of a kitchen, dining area, and living room. This typically means there are no hallways, walls, or doors, which makes for a more inviting layout.

With open floor plans becoming more popular in custom home builds, we wanted to provide you with a brief overview of the various advantages to having an open floor plan to assist you in deciding if it’s right for your new home!

Increased Natural Light

Without interior walls between the kitchen, living, and dining space, natural sunlight has an easier way to travel throughout your home, and helps to connect your indoor space with your outdoor space. When designing your new home, we recommend adding several windows in the living room or kitchen to help brighten up the adjoining rooms. Natural light can also make the room feel bigger.

Better for Communication

Whether you're cooking a nice family meal while your kids are playing in the living room, or you're entertaining guests, an open layout makes it easier for sound to travel, provides better visibility, and brings about a sense of togetherness. An open floor plan allows you to see and hear what's going on in other rooms without everything being muffled or blocked from closed doors and walls.

Easier for Entertaining

To go along with better communication, open floor plans are great for hosting small parties or game nights with friends! If you're cooking in the kitchen or putting together some refreshments, you'll still be able to interact with your guests, and you won't have to worry about running around between rooms to serve the refreshments. You also won't have to miss out on any of the socializing! Another added benefit when entertaining is you won't have to worry about overcrowding in one area of your home!

Improved Traffic Flow

With an open floor plan, you are able to move freely throughout your space without having walls or doors blocking the way from one room to the next. This creates a smoother transitioning between rooms, and improves the overall traffic flow for guests or family members.

Layout Flexibility

Without having walls dividing up your home, it's easier to reconfigure the furniture and accessories within the room to create a variety of room layouts. As your needs for the room change, you have the ability to update sections of the room to serve different purposes.
